Challenge:

Bethel Elementary 19 presented several unique challenges, beginning with its complex, multi-level roof design featuring steep slopes and varying elevations. The biggest challenge was the installation of Deco Ribs, which had to be precisely spaced 12” on center across the entire roof—an intricate and time-consuming task. Ensuring these ribs aligned perfectly with adjacent roof sections was critical to maintaining a seamless, uniform appearance. Given the large scale of the project, this level of precision required careful planning and expert craftsmanship.

Additionally, the school’s steep-sloped roof introduced another challenge. Typically, a slope of this degree would call for metal or shingle roofing, but the project team wanted a more cost-effective solution that still delivered the high-end look of metal. Balancing aesthetics, performance, and budget constraints required an innovative approach.

The project also had a strict deadline—completion before the school year started. The labor-intensive process of welding every rib securely to the membrane, combined with the challenges of working on a sloped surface, made time management a critical factor. Meeting both the aesthetic and functional demands of this project within a tight timeframe required a roofing system that was both durable and efficient to install.

Solution:

To address these challenges, Axiom D7 installed a Duro-Last, Duro-Tuff single-ply roofing system, which provided a cost-effective and durable alternative to traditional metal roofing. This PVC membrane was chosen for its weather resistance, longevity, and ease of installation, making it an ideal solution for the project’s steep slopes. Instead of using a full metal roof, Deco Ribs were incorporated to achieve the desired aesthetic while keeping costs lower than a standing seam system.

The installation process required extreme attention to detail. Each Deco Rib was carefully spaced and welded to the membrane, ensuring a flawless alignment of 38,000 lineal feet of ribs. This meticulous process delivered the clean, structured appearance of a metal roof while maintaining the watertight protection of a single-ply system.

Despite the scale and complexity of the project, Axiom D7 completed the roof on time, ensuring the school was ready for the new academic year. The finished result not only met the client’s design expectations but also provided long-lasting weather protection—demonstrating Axiom D7’s ability to combine craftsmanship, innovation, and efficiency on large-scale roofing projects.
